Kinja'd!!!

I managed to get 4 mounted 285/35-19s into a Mustang and close the trunk.

Kinja'd!!!

The tire situation is under control for this year’s autocross season. Looking forward to our first event of the year this weekend.

My tax return is probably going to go straight to a set of RE71Rs or Z2 star specs.

Crazy. I still don’t even have a W-2.

I e-filed a week ago, they accepted my return on the 22nd and the refund hit today. I even delayed a couple of days after getting my W2. Time to hit up your employer for that tax info...

Are the RE71Rs the go to for autocross/time-attack? This coming season will be my first full season and I want a good start

The RE71Rs are the go to for a 200TW autocross tire. Super sticky but they also don’t last very long. Most people I know only get 1 season of good use out of them before they start giving up.

Personally I would run a full season on whatever tires you have now before switching to something like an RE71R. Learn your car on something with a more forgiving limit before moving to a super sticky tire with more of an edge to it.

somehow that’s not quite the same...

yep, these are the “go-to tire” for autocross. I agree with theTurbochargedSquirrel though. Run a season on what you have first, you’ll slip and slide, but learn a lot on a tire that’s more forgiving of mistakes or overdriving. 2018 will be my 2nd season, and I’ve just stepped up with the new rubber.

I did 4 or 5 events last year on my Potenza’s and thy were definitely a limiting factor. They’re also in need of replacement.

I have a second set of wheels ready for tires but I’m wondering if I could get something that can do double duty

That’s a bit on the edge of pinch I would want. My understanding is they get a little squirmy at that point.

For reference, the fastest GT at nats ran 275 front/285 rear on the staggered GTPP widths. So 275 on a 9", 285 on a 9.5". I plan to to do the same, though I’ll start the season by killing off one or both of the worn sets I already have.

Track duty I hear RE71Rs aren’t the best as they heat up too quickly. Probably better than nothing, but something to keep an eye on.

Tires are certainly the first thing to do, and while I would agree with some that you don’t need to go all the way to RE-71Rs from the get go, there’s little harm. Definitely do an event or two on what you have now to get a feel for it. RE71Rs aren’t forgiving, in my experience the way they pass their limit is a little strange. Not as strange as racing slicks, but still a bit difficult to get a feel for when you’re new.

RE-71Rs suck on the street, by the way. Would not recommend as an only tire unless you don’t mind being miserable daily.
